Complaints and Grievances

23 07 2010

The title of this post is taken from the name of one of George Carlin’s stand-up comedy HBO specials. Arguably the best stand-up comedian I have ever seen so far. Rest in peace Georgie.

This post is to address all the ignorant, stupid (yes, I said stupid because it’s the nicest word I can think of), self-centred, disgusting and shallow Singaporeans who only know how to blame the government. Floods, falling trees, influx of foreign talent and other random crap. Yes, I am happy with our government, I support them, and I think they are doing a pretty fine job now. If you are anti-government and cannot stand reading facts and truths, I would advise you NOT to read on. You have the right to criticise my views elsewhere but not here. Thank you very much.

Let’s talk about floods! In the past 2 months, floods have been occurring in Singapore due to exceptionally heavy rain, and because of a clogged drainage canal. Orchard Road became Orchard River and many other places like Thomson, Bukit Timah and Bedok experienced flooding. The related agencies have come out to say that they were caught off-guard, the Prime Minister has come out to say it’s impossible for Singapore to be flood-free, even the Minister Mentor has come out to say floods are unavoidable with extraordinary rainfall. Related to this, the heavy rains have been causing trees to be uprooted, even injuring and killing people.

And what do Singaporeans have to say? The government is giving excuses, we pay lots of money and taxes and yet they can’t get simple things like drainage and tree maintenance right, the government only knows how to shift blame to Singaporeans for littering and clogging the canals, and even comparing Singapore to the Netherlands. ‘The Netherlands is generally below sea level, and it has come up with a great system to prevent flooding, so why can’t Singapore do that?’ they say. They also say that people who vandalise MRTs in Singapore get slapped with a fine, a jail term and get caned, but people who murder pedestrians can’t even get brought back to Singapore.

What do I have to say? Screw all that crap. In case you haven’t noticed, the La Nina (El Nino’s sister) effect has been taking place this year, if you don’t know what that is, stop complaining and groaning and criticising, and get your ass in the library or on the Internet and find out. In case you haven’t noticed, June and July are supposed to be two of the driest months in Singapore, but there has been plenty of rain these 2 months. Even more than that of what we’d experience during the northeast monsoon, and these rains we’ve been having are HUMONGOUS. In 2 hours of non-stop rain you have 84mm of rainfall, which is more than half the monthly average for June! We’re getting a lot of rain in a very short period of time! Of course there’s bound to be flooding!

And yes, Singaporeans litter! Statistics have shown that 40% of residents in Aljunied GRC think it’s okay to litter. Walk on the streets now and see if you can find some litter. It’s no wonder our drains are so clogged. And yes, it is unrealistic for Singapore to be flood-free, like what MM Lee said, it’s possible, but we’d have to turn half our roads into canals and drains. And of course you’re caught off-guard, how else would you be caught? Would someone say ‘we were ready and expecting this, but we still got caught by this flooding’? So how is that an excuse? They admitted that they did not prepare well enough, how is that an excuse?

Don’t even bother with comparing Singapore to the Netherlands. First of all, The Netherlands used to experience flooding because of the ocean. The bloody goddamn ocean. Flooding coming from the sea. They’ve built a huge network of dams, water drainage systems, storm surge barriers and did land reclamation into what is known as the Zuiderzee Works and Delta Works, so they no longer experience floods. Singapore’s flooding comes from rain. The bloody SKY. Also, the Netherlands experiences a whole lot less rain, compared to Singapore, please go refresh your geography if you’ve forgotten. So how can you compare two countries which has different climates, different causes of flooding, different ways of doing things and different problems?! If you admire the Netherlands so much, then migrate there and get the hell out of here. Instead of complaining, do yourself a favour and shut up, or provide good suggestions and feedback to improve things around here. Why don’t you go experience some more flooding in places like China and Indonesia?

Also, we managed to get that Swiss guy because we caught him and he turned himself in and the Swiss embassy was very co-operative. Our good friend Mr. Silviu Ionescu on the other hand is hiding behind his government, and international laws do not permit us to bring him into Singapore by force. It’s completely two different matters, two different circumstances, so please stop making comments on that.

I was going to move on to foreign talent/workers but I have decided not to go on because I find it such a chore. Screw all you ignorant people who only know how to complain. Singaporeans are way pampered, way too pampered. Something is wrong somewhere with the way Singaporeans are brought up. We take things for granted and we think our country owes us a living. I’d like to end off with a quote.

Don’t go around saying the world owes you a living; the world owes you nothing; it was here first.
–Mark Twain

Hey dude serve your NS and get a job(if you still can with the amount of FT) before you start lecturing others yea?For starters, you can stop living in your little well.

I am not sure if you will talk like this if your precious car is submerged in the basement carpark when you wake up overnight or your house that you have painstakingly invested in suddenly becomes a swimming pool-not once but twice in three weeks

If your house or car gets destroyed every year in a flood then I have nothing to say. Sadly this flooding occurs very rarely, and only when the rain comes in exceptional amounts. Ever heard of something called shit happens? Imagine in one day you get the rainfall you would expect in a month. Is that normal? The government doesn’t owe you a living. Get some flood insurance if you need to.

Yes I have been working, at a job placement centre, and I am waiting for my NS enlistment which is next month.

Singaporeans are losing their jobs to FTs because they ask for a lot. I can safely tell you that because I am doing job matching. When your people doesn’t want to work, naturally we’d have to give the jobs to other people who are willing to do the job with half the expectations and benefits that Singaporeans have and want.

Also I would really appreciate if you could leave your real name. Hongyou here. nice to meet you.

I see you’ve bought the stories the Straits Times churn out, hook line and sinker. You seem to believe wholeheartedly that Singaporeans are losing their jobs because of their overly high expectations, but please ponder over this too:

Foreign workers are sole immigrants. They do not have families here, unlike Singaporeans. Naturally they can make do with much less pay, because unlike Singaporeans, their pays go into feeding one mouth only. If Singaporeans were to lower their job expectations, how will breadwinners ensure that their kids can go to school? Or that they can get by?

And please do not forget national service, followed by reservist. This puts Singaporeans at a disadvantage, as compared to foreigners who do not have to return for reservist.

Please do not buy everything the Straits Times publish, for you should consider the fact that it was ranked 151th in the world for press freedom.

Good day.

They may be sole immigrants, but they still have families back home they need to bring up. I am not saying that Singaporeans should lower their expectations such that they cannot send their children to school, or barely get by. Singaporeans should take a more realistic stance, either be better than these foreign workers, or be prepared to start losing their jobs. Everyone wants to be a supervisor or manager. If you’re really that hard up for money you’d take any job that comes along.

Oh yes and speaking of National Service. It might put us at a disadvantage, but have you considered how important it is? Are we also going to have to rely on foreign workers to protect our country? Are Singaporeans so lacking in national pride and sense of obligation to the country?

I do not buy everything the Straits Times publish, actually to be very honest I don’t read it from cover to cover. Maybe it just so happens my views coincides with what they report on.

Have a good day too yourself.

Why don’t you lead by example with all that “realistic stance” nonsense of yours by qutting your arse-on-the-chair job and become a toilet cleaner, like you said it’s also a job right

Hahahaha yes National Service is so very “important”.Pride and Sense of Obligation?Hahahahaha of course when you are in the jungle digging a pathetic hole for no purpose while your female friends are working or living it up out there or your beloved FT friends are continuing with their tertiary education, will you still say this?

Yes continue to indulge in your fantasy, reality will hit you soon enough next month.Enjoy the remaining few days of freedom.Good Day

It is a job, I agree, but why would I want to work as a toilet cleaner when I have a better job on hand now? Would anyone in the right mind want to change for something not-as-good unless circumstances force you to?

Apparently you didn’t have a very good experience with NS. So tell me, if Singaporeans don’t protect your own country who’s going to? You don’t see any need for NS because there’s no war or conflicts going on which involves our country. Which brings me back to the fact that Singaporeans are living an overly comfortable life.

i agree and support this blogger’s article and comments.

And yes, I’m Singaporean, male, 28 yrs old, born in S’pore and grew up here and served my NS. Lives in a HDB flat.

Not sure if these information is enough to prevent ppl from rebutting tt i am saying i support him becos 1) im not s’porean 2) i have not served NS 3) i’m rich and doesnt understand the plight of common heartland s’poreans.

But no, i cant give you my full name for you to search on me and verify (i am guessing you ppl’s reactions) cos i still need my privacy.

S’poreans blame everything on our govt. That is a fact. Children become spoilt/naughty/bad – blame school / blame teachers. (which is also blaming govt becos schools in spore is under the national system, under MOE). like as if parents only bear the kids, feed them, cloth them but no need to educate.

It’s also the same with littering. “s’pore has so many road cleaners wat… with all the road cleaning vehicles… we can throw anywhere!”

S’pore govt does have one problem, i think – acts too much like a parent, resulting in citizens acting like small kids, thus society can never mature.
That’s the problem tt the spore govt is at fault.
